Lunch seminar 5.3.2020 on Thursday 5.3.2020 at 11.30-12.30 in hotel Arkipelag’s restaurant.
"Regional separatism and European integration – Catalonia, Scotland and the EU"
Speaker: Niklas Bremberg

How can we explain and understand the support for independence for regions in Europe? Why strive to establish independence when the EU already offers political influence and economic benefits to regions, such as Catalonia? What challenges and opportunities follow from the UK's exit from the EU for a region like Scotland that still wants to be a member of the EU?

The lecture addresses the question of regional separatism and European integration with a focus on Catalonia and Scotland. How has the EU dealt with these developments historically and what democratic and normative problems are being raised by these issues today?

Niklas Bremberg is an associate professor of political science at Stockholm University and a senior researcher at the Foreign Policy Institute (UI), as well as an associate researcher at the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI). He has been a guest researcher at University of Toronto, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and European Policy Center (Brussels). His expertise includes EU foreign and security policy, EU relations with southern Mediterranean countries, particularly North Africa and Morocco, as well as Spanish foreign and security policy. He is currently researching regional separatism and European integration, as well as the EU's work on managing climate-related security risks.

Lunch can be purchased in the restaurant and brought in to the seminar which is held in the secluded southern part of the restaurant. The seminar starts at 11.30 and lasts for an hour.

We are grateful for registration in our event, but it is also possible to drop in.
