The Director attended research network RECAST meeting on political participation and mobilization of citizens

The research network RECAST (Reappraising Intellectual Debates on Civic Rights and Democracy in Europe) had a meeting and a seminar at the Central European University in Budapest on 19-20 September 2019. The seminar discussed new forms for political participation and mobilization of citizens. In November 2019 the Training School of the network will be organised in co-operation with the Norwegian Institute at Athens. For further information about the Training School see here. The research network is financed through the so called COST-program (Cooperation in Science and Technology) and researchers from 30 European countries belong to the netwotk. The Director of the Peace Institute, Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark, acts as the Vice Chairperson of the network.

 

Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark at European Society of International Law conference on sovereignty

Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark attended the 15th annual conference of the European Society of International Law. This time the conference had the theme "Sovereignty: a concept in flux?". It was held 12-14 September at the University of Athens. More information here.

Susann Simolin discussed borders in Gibraltar

On 26-28.9 Susann Simolin took part in the Gibraltar Garrison Library Symposium on Borders and Boundaries, and presented a paper discussing how the location and functionality of borders and boundaries around Åland is related to and has effects for, among others, the division and overlaps of powers and the relationship between the autonomy and the state, the use and restriction of use of military force, the protection of language and culture as well as perceptions of identities. From Åland, also the Speaker of the Åland Parliament, Gun Mari Lindholm, as well as board member of the Åland Islands Peace Institute Göran Lindholm participated. Other scholars presented their works on borders and boundaries in relation to, amongst others, Gibraltar, Northern Ireland, migration and Brexit.
