To ensure sustainable development, autonomous regions must \u201cthink for themselves\u201d and\u00a0provide inspiring, inclusive and dynamic environments for developing new ideas, as well as attract young people to stay or to return to the region. Strategies, cooperation, digitalizationand investments on infrastructure are perquisites for knowledge development and research. What are the key development areas of \u00c5land, and what is happening in other regions?<\/span><\/p>\n

These thoughts and questions where discussed on 22 October when<\/span>\u00a0the KUT-network (<\/span>N<\/span>etwork for <\/span>s<\/span>ustainable knowledge development<\/span> on <\/span>\u00c5land<\/span>) organized\u00a0<\/span>a conference on the subject <\/span>\u201c<\/span>Knowledge and Research as Motors for Regional Development and Innovation<\/strong>\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first half of the conference was held in English with four keynote speakers:\u00a0G\u00fcnther Rautz<\/strong>, EURAC Research in South Tyrol Italy,\u00a0<\/span>Nina <\/strong>Harjunp\u00e4\u00e4<\/strong>,\u00a0University Association of South Ostrobothnia,\u00a0Annika S\u00f8lvar\u00e1<\/strong>, the Research Council in Faroe Islands,\u00a0Jouko Kinnunen<\/strong>, \u00c5SUB.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The conference can be watched on the youtube channel <\/a>of the <\/span>\u00c5land<\/span> Islands Peace Institute.<\/span><\/p>\n

In the first <\/span>half<\/span> of the conference,\u00a0<\/span>Director of the <\/span>\u00c5land<\/span> Islands Peace Institute<\/span>,<\/span> Sia Spiliopoulou \u00c5kermark,<\/strong>\u00a0welcomed the speakers and the audience, and Minister of Development Alfons R\u00f6blom<\/strong> opened the conference with his forewords. Minister R\u00f6blom noted\u00a0that the themes of the conference go hand in hand with a long tradition of \u00c5land Islands to be able to do things self when possible but also search for inspiration from outside when needed.<\/p>\n

Four keynote speakers gave\u00a0<\/span>their<\/span> insight on<\/span> knowledge <\/span>development<\/span> in different regions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Dr <\/span>G\u00fcnther Rautz<\/strong>, <\/span>M<\/span>anaging <\/span>D<\/span>irector <\/span>of<\/span> the Institute <\/span>for Minority Rights <\/span>at EURAC Research <\/span>in South Tyrol, Italy, gaves an overview on<\/span> the development and growth of the institute<\/span> and the role <\/span>of EURAC<\/span> in the autonomous South Tyrol today<\/span>.<\/span> Established<\/span> in 1992 with 12 employees<\/span>, the institute <\/span>has grown to employ 300 researchers from 30 countries<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Nina <\/strong>Harjunp\u00e4\u00e4<\/strong>,\u00a0Senior Planning Officer<\/span> at the University Association of South Ostrobothnia<\/span><\/span>presented<\/span>\u00a0how <\/span>Epanet<\/span>, the Research and Innovation <\/span>Programme<\/span> of South Ostrobothnia, <\/span>is developing<\/span> new research culture <\/span>with<\/span> increased cooperation between universities, research institutes, <\/span>businesses<\/span> and local organizations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Annika S\u00f8lvar\u00e1<\/strong>,<\/span> D<\/span>irector <\/span>of<\/span> the Research Council in Faroe Islands, <\/span>told<\/span>\u00a0about how the<\/span>autonomous<\/span> Faroe Islands <\/span>work <\/span>with research politics and financing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jouko Kinnunen<\/strong>, Head of Research of <\/span>Statistics and Research <\/span>\u00c5land<\/span> (\u00c5SUB)<\/span>, spoke about <\/span>\u00c5land\u00b4s economic success and challenges as well as\u00a0growth, <\/span>resources,<\/span> and <\/span>\u2018<\/span>smart <\/span>regions<\/span>\u2019<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The first <\/span>half<\/span> of the conference was concluded with a discussion on comparative experiences in English<\/span>, <\/span>moderated by <\/span>Hanna Hagmark<\/strong>, <\/span>D<\/span>irector <\/span>of<\/span> \u00c5land<\/span> Maritime Museum.<\/span> After lunch<\/span>, <\/span>the conference continued with a panel discussion in Swedish.<\/span><\/p>\n

Thomas Lundberg<\/strong>, CEO at Crosskey, Martha Hannus<\/strong>, sustainability strategist at Emmaus \u00c5land, Johanna Mattila<\/strong>, Rector of \u00c5land University of Applied Sciences, Anders Gustafsson<\/strong>, engineer at Pedago, Pernilla Weckman<\/strong>, CEO at April Kommunikation andAnders Ekstr\u00f6m<\/strong>, CEO at the \u00c5land Chamber of Commerce, took part in the discussion on \u00c5land’s need for developing local knowledge and competence in order to enable possibilities for expertise, reseach and innovation.<\/p>\n

The conference<\/span> took place at the <\/span>\u00c5land<\/span> Maritime Museum<\/span> and a limited number of seats for audience were available. Around 50 persons followed the conference live from the Peace Institute’s youtube channel<\/a>\u00a0where the conference is still available.

The conference was arrange<\/span>d<\/span> by the Network for Sustainable Knowledge Development on <\/em><\/span>\u00c5land<\/em> (the KUT-network) in cooperation with the Government of <\/span>\u00c5land<\/span>.
