The public debate on Åland’s demilitarisation continues, with a changed security situation and increased focus on security issues and defence. The Ålandic exemption from military service and questions of Ålandic preparedness and resilience are also discussed in the media, and sometimes it is difficult to know how we who live here should understand these issues and interpret the debate. What role and what powers do Åland and its self-government actually have when it comes to security issues in general and demilitarisation in particular? What do the treaties and national legislation say and what applies in practice? Has Åland’s position on these issues changed over the years?
Welcome to listen to and discuss with our senior advisor Susanne Eriksson on 15 January at 18.00 at Mariehamn City Library. With her knowledge and experience from her many years as director of the Åland Parliament, she will answer questions and clarify the concepts.
