The research and educational activities of the Åland Islands Peace Institute take place within projects and networks, or in cooperation with research institutions and other knowledge-oriented organisations. The Åland Islands Peace Institute has initiated and participated in several projects where researchers from various disciplines, specialising in autonomy, minority and security matters have worked together. Among them are the projects: Minorities around the Baltic Sea (2003-2006), The Åland Example and Its Components (2010-2011 and again after 2018) and a project on minority languages and multilingualism in Europe (ELDIA, 2010-2013).
The Åland Islands Peace Institute has extensive experience in organising and participating in meetings with participants from or active in conflict situations and regions and peace efforts as well as in working with youth, youth exchanges and volunteers, for instance within the EU Erasmus programmes. The Institute has earlier worked in projects about gender dimensions and violence and gender equality. Such projects are supported through local, national or international funders.
