On the 20th of October last year, 100 years had passed since the signing of the 1921 Convention relating to the Non-fortification and neutralisation of the Åland Islands. The Åland parliament celebrated this centenary through an international seminar titled ’Demilitarisation and neutralisation– a stabilising force for peace in the region’. The speeches from the seminar are now published in Journal of Autonomy and Security Studies, in time for the Åland Demilitarisation Day on the 30th of March. The Demilitarisation Day in turn, marks the signing of the very first demilitarisation convention of 1856.
