Director of the Åland Islands Peace Institute, Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark, says regarding the Nobel Peace Prize 2014: Nobel’s will had a fairly comprehensive description of the purposes for which the peace prize is to strive for. He said that it is “fraternity between the nations and the abolition or reduction of standing armies and the formation and spreading of peace congresses” that deserves attention. The Nobel Peace Prize Committee’s decision makes it clear that children must be respected and protected from all forms of violence, both in war but also in peacetime. Violence breeds eventually new violence. By promoting peaceful relations towards and between children and young people, we strengthenthe long-term chance of peace around the world. It is important also here at home, e.g. for the work against bullying and the right to a good education for all children.
