In recent decades we have seen many conflicts in the world where a central feature is that one or more ethnic groups within a state are seeking greater self-determination, in some cases independence. In many such situations, self-government or other forms of power-sharing have been discussed and sometimes introduced as an attempt to resolve the conflict through compromise.
What are these conflicts about and is there a case for using self-government as a format for resolving conflict? What does research say about this? Why does Åland sometimes come up as an example in the context of conflict resolution?
Come and listen to Susann Simolin, Director of the Åland Islands Peace Institute and PhD student in political science at Åbo Akademi University, where she researches issues of autonomy and conflict resolution. She has worked at the Åland Islands Peace Institute since 2008 and has come into contact with groups from conflict regions and other actors seeking ways to resolve conflicts.
