On Friday 14th of August the campaign “mÅngfaLd på Åland” – “Diversity on Åland” will be launched. The campaign aims at highlighting the fact that Åland has become a diverse society. Today people from 82 different countries are part of Åland’s population that amounts to a total of 27.000 people, and over 50 different languages are spoken on the islands.
The campaign is a joint effort of organisations and companies on Åland, many of which already work with questions of multiculturalism and integration. wWth this campaign we want to show that we are all working for the same cause – a multicultural Åland where everybody, irrespective of their background, can live and thrive together!
The campaign is being launched at the Cultural Night of Åland on 14th of August, with a “living library” held in the library of Mariehamn. At the living library living books – human beings – can be loaned for conversations and discussions. The books represent different groups that may be exposed to prejudices and misunderstandings.
At the same day the website of the campaign will be launched at www.peace.ax/mangfald.
A newly produced leaflet will be distributed during the Cultural night, covering interviews and pictures that illustrate diversity on Åland. During the autumn there will be more events in connection to the campaign, such as a multicultural soccer and first aid training with the players of IFK Mariehamn, a course in making radio, an international cooking course and a series of articles on diversity and multiculturalism.
Organisers of the campaign are the Åland Islands Peace Institute, The Red Cross Åland district, The Åland Peace Association/Emmaus, the Multucultural Association of Åland, Hej Åland, Medis, Tidningen Åland, the Nordic Institute on Åland and IFK Mariehamn.
