Restorative Justice and Practice in the Nordic Region–Nordic Benefits?
The project will revitalise knowledge exchange and networking between Nordic actors in different types of restorative justice (RJ) and practices, such as mediation.
The main questions are the following:
- How is RJ organised in each country?
- What RJ services exist – public services, non-governmental organisations, other RJ-related services or activities?
- What are the experiences and research results?
- What are the opportunities and challenges for RJ in each country?
The project consists of an expert seminar including workshop in Åland 12-14 May 2025. The seminar contributions will then be summarised in a publication to be released in September 2025.
The target group is people active in RJ as practitioners, academics, officials and policy makers. The project is led by the Åland Islands Peace Institute (Åland, Finland) with a steering group of representatives from the Institute of Health and Welfare Finland, the Ministry of Justice Finland, the Finnish Forum for Mediation, Åbo Akademi University Finland, the National Mediation Service Norway and the Association for Restorative Justice and Practice in Denmark. Digital participation is possible and parts of the seminar will be recorded. The project is funded by the Nordic Council of Ministers.

Location: Lemböte campsite, Åland and online
Transport to and from Åland: See Visit Åland
Accommodation: for a limited number of participants on site (first come, first served), free accommodation (simple campsite standard, single room with shared toilet and shower) will be organised at Lemböte campsite. At the moment there are 10 such places left. Otherwise, there are hotels in Mariehamn 12 kilometres away at cost price. Transport to and from hotels in Mariehamn is organised free of charge.
