The project researchers reviewed and analysed the main components of the Åland example, notably concepts, principles, actors, institutions and processes. Interviews were made with persons (diplomats, politicians, researchers) who have been in contact with the use of autonomy solutions as a possible tool in international conflict resolution. The project received support from the Åland Government and the Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland. It ended with an international symposium and the publication of the book “The Åland Example and Its Components – Relevance for International Conflict Resolution” (The Åland Islands Peace Institute, 2011). Many renowned experts and authors contributed to this work, including Yash Ghai, Fujio Ohnishi and Kjell-Åke Nordquist. In 2013, a special issue (Vol. 20, Issue 1) of the International Journal on Minority and Group Rights with the title “Rethinking Territorial Arrangements in Conflict Resolution” was published, following up on and deepening some of the original research questions.
