On March 30, 2022, it is time for the Kastelholm Talks 2022.
It will be the eight such event in a row and the title is:
Breakthrough or Breakdown? About Building Trust and Enhancing Disarmament Today
What risks and opportunities do we see in front of us? How can we enhance trust between and within countries? What does the global arms trade look like today? How is disarmament work pursued? What role do Nordic countries play in such arms trade as well as in confidence building and disarmament efforts?
We are currently experiencing peace and security as fragile. In coming years, we need to continue addressing major global challenges through peaceful means. We are faced with the choice between a breakthrough, or a breakdown, in the UN Secretary General’s words.
The political tone is often harsher and geopolitical tensions have increased in recent years. The pandemic seems to exacerbate such polarizations and widens gaps within and between countries. Competition for the earth’s finite resources is fierce while the climate impact places urgent demands on all societies and in all corners of the world. Anti-democratic tendencies are observed in many places, not least among the great powers of today.
But there are also nuances in the analysis of the current conditions. According to the international peace research institute SIPRI, we have a mixed picture in front of us.
What risks and opportunities do we currently see in front of us? How can we enhance trust between and within countries? How does the global arms trade look like today? How is disarmament work pursued? What role do Nordic countries play in such arms trade as well as in disarmament and confidence building efforts? These are some of the issues that will be discussed during the 2022 Kastelholm Talks on peace.
For 2022 we plan to be back again at the medieval castle of Kastelholm for the high profile castle conversation to then deepen and develop the discussions at a roundtable at Alandica in Mariehamn. We will of course keep an eye on the pandemic situation and adapt the event to current recommendations.
As an upbeat and inspiration, we will release episodes in the podcast series “Before the Kastelholm Talks 2022” with exciting voices and perspectives on this year’s theme.
More detailed information about all this will come in early 2022, so keep an eye on the website and our social media for further news.
