Internship summer 2014
Expressions of interest for an internship at the Åland Islands Peace Institute should be sent by email within the month of February 2014. Such expressions of interest should include a motivation letter covering the areas of interest and the qualifications of the applicant and why she/he would find it rewarding to engage in the work of the Åland Islands Peace Institute. They should also include a CV and, if possible, a reference person. Priority shall be given to students and youth specialised in the focus areas of the Åland Islands Peace Institute. Peace Institute researcher Sarah Stephan participated between 24 June and 5 July in a summer school on Human Rights, minorities and diversity management at the European Academy in Bozen/Bolzano (Eurac). Sarah Stephan at Global Bar in Belgrade
On Wednesday 13 November 2013 at 19.00 Peace Institute researcher Sarah Stephan will participate in a panel debate at the European Center for Culture and Debate in Belgrade organized by the Swedish NGO Global Reporting. The event is part of the series “Global Bars”. Global Bars are informal meeting places where people working with international issues meet to debate current events, exchange ideas and network. While Global Bars have been organized in Stockholm for ten year, this is the second time Global Reporting organizes a Global Bar in Belgrade. The panel debate will focus on minorities, autonomy and cultural heritage. Another panelist is Igor Stiks, researcher at Edinburg University and a local representative yet to be announced by the organization Cultural Heritage without Borders. On Thursday 14 November at 19.00 Sarah will give a lecture about the Åland Example at the Kolarac Endowment in Belgrade. Read more about Global Reporting’s Global Bars project here.
Visit by Peter Nobel
On 4 October 2013 the Peace Institute had the honor of a visit by Peter Nobel, former Discrimination Ombudsman in Sweden who has worked for a long time with several human rights issues in Sweden and internationally. Mr Nobel was accompanied by his wife Weini, who is working for the Equality Ombudsman in Sweden as well as Michael Ståhl and Dorrit Alopeaus Ståhl who have both, amongst others, worked extensively with aid in Africa. The meeting discussed the Peace Institute’s work with minority issues and self-government solutions. Peter Nobel also talked about efforts to promote Saami rights and participation in the Swedish and Nordic context. A seminar on the Nordic Saami convention was held at the Swedish parliament in June 2013. Read more about the seminar here.
