Strangers by Degrees: Attitudes toward Immigrants in the Åland Islands

Report nr 2-2009
The report sums up and synthesizes the result of a survey that was carried out among 1000 randomly chosen people on mainland Åland, the archipelago and Mariehamn in 2008. The aim with the project has been to study the views and attitudes towards migration and compare the result to similar studies in Finland and Sweden. The basis for the study is primarily the need of knowledge in order to develop strategies for integration on Åland and secondly the insight that there is a lack of research analysing migration matters in an autonomous region with a strong regional identity and in comparison with other countries. The author concludes that Åland has many advantages and good prerequisites for building a well-functioning and including integration process.
