The Åland Islands Peace Institute annually receives two to four university interns who are given the opportunity to increase their knowledge within the institute’s core areas.
In addition to the university internships, the Peace Institute also accommodates other forms of work training, such as Swedish language internships.
The university internship is financed through AMS University Internship or through other external sources.
The Åland Islands Peace Institute offers interns relevant tasks, a stimulating work environment, and supervision.
We see internships as an opportunity to support the development of skills and knowledge within our field of activity. Interns are offered meaningful tasks and personal guidance. The work responsibilities can vary greatly depending on the ongoing projects.
Our previous interns have had vastly different backgrounds, which can be seen below. They have studied, among other things, international relations, international law, sociology, economics, history, and language. To apply for an internship with us you do not need to study a specific subject; rather, it is important that you have an interest that falls within the Peace Institute’s principal focus areas of peace issues, security, minorities, and autonomy.
The intern may, for example, work with contributing to ongoing research, helping with seminar arrangements, working with dissemination of information through our social media, newsletter, website and YouTube.

In order to apply for an internship, you should have completed at least your first year of studies but have not received a master’s degree.
The internship is full-time and normally 10 weeks, or as agreed.
Unfortunately, the Peace Institute does not have the possibility of financing internships thus the intern should apply for external funding through, for example, AMS University Internship or his/her institution.
The call for applications is subject to our needs, in autumn or/and spring.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept interns during the summer months.

Your internship application should include your CV and a short motivation letter that clarifies why you are interested in an internship at the Peace Institute and with what you wish to work. Additionally, include relevant information about your institution and/or sponsorship program.

As a Swedish-speaking Finn I have read about the “Åland example” in history class, but it was only during the internship period that I really understood what this special position entails and how Åland can serve as an example of a peaceful solution of a minority conflict.
