In 2018 the Framework Convention for the Protection on National Minorities (FCNM) celebrates its 20th anniversary. The anniversary is marked with a new publication entitled “20 Years of Dealing with Diversity: Is the Framework Convention at a Cross-Road?”, published by the European Centre for Minority Issues.
Our Head of Research, Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark, contributed to the publication as an expert of minority issues and as former president of the Advisory Committee of the Framework Convention. She was interviewed to analytically and critically reflect upon the Framework Convention’s contribution until now.
Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark highlighted the achievement of the FCNM as a legally binding link between the accommodation of minorities and human rights. In addition, Sia mentions the importance of the development of the Advisory Committee as a monitory instrument for the implementation of the Framework Convention favouring continuity and consistence in European efforts on minority matters.
