The Pandemic Does Not Stop the Kastelholm Talks

Theme for 2021: Creating Peace – Meetings, the Mediator and Peace

What is peace? How far do partners go in a conflict with a ceasefire? What happens next?

On Monday, March 29 2021, it is time for the Peace Institute’s annual talks on peace which is always held in connection to Åland’s demilitarization day. The Kastelholm Talks under the patronage of Finland’s former President Tarja Halonen.

Can you create peace through mediation and diplomacy? Can frozen conflicts be resolved? How are solutions negotiated? And what is required for the parties to come to the negotiating table? These are some of the issues that will be discussed.

– We hope for really nice speakers and a well-made and high-quality production that can be a great knowledge resource for many, says Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark who hopes that the Kastelholm talks in their new form can also reach an interested audience far beyond Åland’s borders.

The new hybrid concept:

A few weeks before the Kastelholm Talks, a podcast-series will be released, with one episode a week, where selected commentators give their perspective on this year’s theme and reflect on what will be addressed by this year’s panel.

A panel discussion – usually helt at the Kastelholm Castle – will be pre-recorded. The panel, consists of prominent speakers who discuss this year’s theme. On 29 March 2021, the castle discussion will be streamed online, analogue and in the foyer at Alandica.

On the same day, after the screening of the castle discussion, the digital/physical after-talk starts, also at Alandica, where both the audience on site and participants online can ask questions.
