Breakfast seminar on May 31, 2023 at the library in Mariehamn.
We all know that Åland is called the islands of peace, but what the concept of demilitarization is, means and implies for Åland, Finland and the outside world is not always so obvious.
Åland’s demilitarization has been regularly questioned since it came into force 167 years ago. Now the debate is on again and the questions are many: What agreements does it rest on? Can the Finnish government decide on its own to abolish it? How should we think about military service? Are we naive if we believe that Åland can continue to be the islands of peace?
We at the Peace Institute have been researching Åland’s position including demilitarization for over 30 years and have knowledge and experience.
Whether you are a politician, a journalist, a teacher or an interested citizen who wants to learn more, come to our breakfast seminar and listen when our director Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark, juris doctor and associate professor of international law, clarifies what are myths and truths in a conversation with our information officer Liz Lindvall.
Everyone is welcome to participate and discuss.
The seminar is free of charge. Please register in advance to liz@peace.ax
