Lunch seminar on international guarantees for the Åland Solution

How important is the issue of international guarantees for the Åland solution today? Are there any such guarantees at all? Welcome to our lunch seminar with Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark, Professor at Åbo Akademi University and former Director of the Åland Islands Peace Institute. The seminar is based on a study commissioned by the Government of Åland. The seminar will be held in Kaptenssalen at Hotel Arkipelag and lunch can be bought in the restaurant and take into the lecture hall. When is the seminar? 10 June 2024 at 12-13 pm Where? Visual digital art as a peace building tool

Very warmly welcome to a lunchseminar that focuses on the question of how we could design and use digital technologies and digital art in order to support peace efforts. Lisa Glybchenko, a Ukrainian researcher from TAPRI (Tampere Peace Research Institute), social entrepreneur and initiative taker to the Color Up Peace-project, will guide us through these interesting topics. Visual peace technologies Visual images as security-building tools Digital and virtual reality peacebuilding Peace practices and research are becoming more and more tech-infused, not least because of the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on these fields, and several armed conflicts around the world including Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine and its effects to everyday lives in Ukraine and beyond. That means, we should be better equipped with knowledge of peace technologies to better design and implement peace initiatives, even after the war has ended. The seminar will focus on visual peace technologies, also drawing on the role of visual arts in peacebuilding. We will closely look into using Virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) applications used as peacebuilding tools. Lunch seminar on border security

Ahead of UN Day, we are pleased to present the Åland Peace Lecture on October 23rd with this year’s guest researcher Clifford Okwany from Kenya! The seminar will be held in English, with the opportunity to ask questions in Swedish, and will focus on different approaches to border security in Africa and their relevance to us in the Nordic Region. A warm welcome to a lunchtime seminar on border security in the Horn of Africa, with a particular focus on northern Kenya bordering Ethiopia, Uganda and Somalia. Questions to be answered during the seminar are the following: What does security mean in different contexts and for different actors? Why are there border conflicts affecting pastoralist communities in the Horn of Africa? What are the policy recommendations for peaceful coexistence between pastoralist communities in the North? The seminar will provide a brief history of the pastoral communities in East Africa, particularly the Sabaot, Pokot and Turkana in the northwest of Kenya and Somalia, Borana and Oroma communities in the northeast, and the introduction of the state system that drew boundaries that affected pastoralist livelihoods, leading to conflicts and state border security. Facts for a good decision – where environment and economy meet

Before the International Day of Democracy, the KUT network invites you to a new lunch seminar on September 14th, in the seminar series “Facts for good decisions”. How do you deal with conflicting objectives between different areas of society? How can you find intersections where different societal interests can work together to drive development in a sustainable direction? Is growth needed to finance sustainable transition? What is the role of the EU? How can you reach decision-makers with serious messages? These and other questions will be discussed during the lunch seminar. The panel consists of: Siv Sandberg, lecturer and researcher in public administration at Åbo Akademi University. She is an expert on Nordic public administration, in particular the development and future prospects of municipalities. She has worked several times as an investigator on the division of municipalities in Åland. Bengt Kriström, Professor of Natural Resource Economics (1994-), SLU-Umeå, Associate Professor of Economics, HHS, Stockholm, Senior Advisor CERE (Environmental Economics Center in Umeå). Åland demilitarization – myths and truths

Breakfast seminar on May 31, 2023 at the library in Mariehamn. We all know that Åland is called the islands of peace, but what the concept of demilitarization is, means and implies for Åland, Finland and the outside world is not always so obvious. Åland’s demilitarization has been regularly questioned since it came into force 167 years ago. Now the debate is on again and the questions are many: What agreements does it rest on? Can the Finnish government decide on its own to abolish it? How should we think about military service? Are we naive if we believe that Åland can continue to be the islands of peace? We at the Peace Institute have been researching Åland’s position including demilitarization for over 30 years and have knowledge and experience. Whether you are a politician, a journalist, a teacher or an interested citizen who wants to learn more, come to our breakfast seminar and listen when our director Sia Spiliopoulou Åkermark, juris doctor and associate professor of international law, clarifies what are myths and truths in a conversation with our information officer Liz Lindvall. Lunch seminar- Can you repair injustice? Conflict management with restorative justice

We are used to seeing justice as something delivered by a judge in court. The punitive justice system primarily aims to restore justice in relation to the state and the law. The restorative justice is a complementary system to manage conflicts or criminal cases and puts the parties first. The restorative justice theory underpines different types of mediation. Pia Slögs (LLB and MA restorative justice) is Secretary-General at Finnish Forum for Mediation’s International Program and has 20 years of experience in mediation. The lunch seminar will be held at Kaptenssalen, Arken on Wednesday 26th of April, 11.30-12.30. The seminar will be held in Swedish.

Lunch seminar – facts to make a good decision

Are facts needed in politics and in decision-making? What kind of facts are needed for good decisions? Do the decision makers have access to the facts they need? Are facts enough for making good decisions? During this super election year 2023, the KUT network wants to raise questions about knowledge in decision-making. Everyone is welcome and we are especially targeting those of you who are already elected decision-makers or who are considering running for office this year. We are relaunching our Lunch Seminars

Which are the global megatrends of today?  Wednesday 27.10.2021  at 11.30 am in hotel Arkipelag’s restaurant  What are the greatest challenges for humanity today and in the years to come? Climate change, environmental degradation, population growth, urbanisation, increasing inequality, migration, our growing cyber-dependence, the increasing debt of the world economy or the failure of global governance?  Lars Backström has worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland for 40 years. He has previously served as an ambassador to Australia, China and Thailand, among others, and now works in the ministry’s unit for policy planning and research.  Join us for lunch in hotel Arkipelag’s restaurant and listen to Backström’s seminar – held in English – about today’s global megatrends.  The seminars are usually held in the secluded southern portion of the Hotel Arkipelag’s restaurant, 11.30-12.30. Lunch can be paid for at the restaurant and is brought into the seminar. Lunch Seminar 9.10.2019 – Edvard Johansson: Small Economies and Global Trends – How Can Åland Meet the Future?

In the light of such trends and from an economic perspective, what are the prospects for the Ålandic economy and for the Ålandic autonomy legislation? Edvard Johansson is Doctor of Economic Sciences from the Hanken School of Economics and Associate Professor in Economics at the Åbo Akademi University. He is a previous Rector of the Åland University of Applied Sciences. His presentation is based on economic research about amongst other things globalisation and digitalisation as well as still unpublished results about the Ålandic economy in relation to the Finnish one. The seminar is held in Swedish. Lunch can be bought in the restaurant and taken to the seminar held in the southern part of the restaurant. The seminar will start at 11.30 and will last an hour.
