The Peace Institute is pleased to announce that Dr Marie Jacobsson has been elected as a new member of the Institute’s Board.
– It is truly an honour to be appointed as a member of the Board of the Peace Institute. I have followed with interest the important activities of the Institute since its inception. The combination of research and practical dissemination of the Åland Example makes the Institute particularly relevant in times like these, she comments on the appointment.
Marie Jacobsson, former Ambassador and Adviser on International Law at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, is one of Sweden’s most experienced experts in international peace and security. She has a solid background in both multilateral and bilateral negotiations, with a particular focus on the UN Charter, international humanitarian law, the law of the sea and maritime security, border issues and regional security. She is an Associate Professor of International Law at Lund University.
From 2007 to 2016, Ms Jacobsson was a member of the UN Commission on International Law, where she also served as Special Rapporteur on the protection of the environment in the context of armed conflict. She is currently a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration and is appointed as an arbitrator under international agreements, including the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty. She is also a conciliator at the OSCE Conciliation and Arbitration Centre. Marie is Chair of the Stockholm Centre for International Law and Justice (SCILJ) and a member of the International Advisory Panel of the Centre for International Law, National University of Singapore.

Her deep and broad knowledge and experience of international peace and security issues, and not least of the international law dimension, is of course a great asset to the Institute and fits our profile extremely well. The Institute has always had at least one member from Sweden, that contact is important to us, and who better as a contact to the West than Marie, with her roots both in the research community and in diplomacy, says Susann Simolin, Director of the Peace Institute.
In addition to her expertise in international law, Marie Jacobsson has also worked as a security policy analyst at the Swedish Armed Forces, which further broadens her perspective on peace and security issues.
Marie was elected at the Board meeting of 16 April 2025, during which Board members Anders Lidén and Jean Banyanga-Nubaha were thanked.
