Regional cooperation
The Åland Islands Peace Institute has built a well-functioning network of non-governmental organisations in Lithuania, Belarus and the Kaliningrad region (Russia). This co-operation is based on the experiences gained and methods developed at the Nendre Centre for Women and Children in Vilnius, Lithuania. Nendre was established in 1998 by the Åland Islands Peace Institute and the Devyndarbe Women’s Club. Today the Centre offers social services to single mothers and their children. It provides support to the mothers, day care for small children and afternoon activities for school children. Nendre has become recognized as one of the leading organisations in the field of gender equality education and promotion in Lithuania. Since 2005 Nendre has been sharing its experiences with organisations in Belarus and Kaliningrad. The goal is to give marginalised groups the strength to manage their problems and to take control of their own lives. Project initiatives include training, counselling and development activities for women and children. The Åland Islands Peace Institute has also helped to spread the “girls’ group” method in Lithuania. Volunteers at the Peace Institute
European Voluntary Service The Peace Institute worked with volunteers within the European Voluntary Service, EVS. We were both a hosting and a sending organization. EU-funding for EVS voluntary projects was administrated by the National Agencies, in Finland by the Center for International Mobility CIMO. EVS is an international volunteer program funded by the European Commission. It enables all young people legally resident in Europe, aged between 18 and 30 years, to carry out an international volunteer service in an organisation or in a public body in Europe, Africa, Asia or South America for a period ranging from 2 to 12 months. If you are interested in volunteering abroad, please see the EVS database for running projects. Please note that the Peace Institute is not planning to send or host any volunteers for 2016. Here are our latest volunteers: Philip Sjöwall: I worked as a volunteer for the organization in Greece Archelon – the Sea Turtle Protection Society of Greece at their rescue center in Glyfada. My work duties have mostly been cleaning the tank, wash turtles, given injections and drips, cleaning different kinds of wounds (head, skin, fins), transportedtortoises and various repair works etc.. Much of the work was also to take care of the center’s visitors, tourists, schools and other groups. This work involvedworking in our shop, presentations and give guided tours. Youth work
The Åland Islands Peace Institute participates in international youth work in the following areas: European Voluntary Service (EVS). The Institute sends out and receives volunteers. Youth exchange programmes. Seminars, courses and other activities aimed at promoting dialogue and knowledge about the living conditions of other people. Youth exchange on Åland, 2010.
Peace in Schools on Åland
With Folkhälsan as the core organizer, the Åland Islands Peace Institute, Save the Children, and the Department for Education at the local government are cooperating in order to promote ‘Peace in Schools’. ‘Peace in Schools’ is intended to highlight how important it is that everyone involved in school life work together for a humane educational environment. The purpose of jointly proclaiming ‘Peace in Schools’ and adopting a joint declaration for the school year is to emphasize that everyone at school has a right to a safe and equal learning environment, without bullying and sexual harassment. The aim is also to highlight the school’s operating culture and the physical and psychological security in school. Finally, the purpose is to stress the responsibility of the individual student, the teacher, the home and the staff in the maintaining of friendships and friendly relations in the school. In 2009-2010 ‘Peace in Schools’ was proclaimed on the 28th of August on the main square in Mariehamn, and throughout the year themes and activities aimed at preventing bullying and promoting tolerance will be emphasized. Education & youth work
In the framwork of its empowerment work and efforts for prevention of violence the ÅIPI is working with local and international educational activities for both adults and young people. The Åland Islands Peace Institute engages in projects and partnerships where courses can be arranged on Åland and internationally, for adults or youngsters, about the Åland Example, self-government, minority issues, security issues, peace and conflict resolution, and/or gender issues. Courses are customized to the wishes of the particular group and/or co-operating partner organizations. The Åland Islands Peace Institute participates in international youth work within the framework of the Youth Programmes of the EU. The ÅIPI can arrange or send groups of young people to Youth Exchanges. The ÅIPI sends out and receives volunteers and can also host interns for shorter periods of time. The Institute runs a project called Educating for Peace in Åland’s schools. The aim is to introduce knowledge and experience about conflict management, non-violence, tolerance and school mediation in local schools. The Peace Institute runs this project in collaboration with the Åland Government and the schools. The Åland Islands Peace Institute is included in several networks of organisations and institutions that work with related issues. The institute has consultative status with the UN Economic and Social Council, ECOSOC. The activities of the Åland Islands Peace Institute are directed at a broad target group, both on Åland, in Finland and the Nordic Region, and internationally. The Peace Institute’s researchers and guest researchers focus on three broad subject areas: Security Autonomy, including the “Åland Example” Minorities The institute regularly publishes books and reports in these areas. By arranging seminars and conferences and through a growing library that is open to the public, the Institute serves as a meeting point for Åland, the Nordic countries and the Baltic Sea Region.
