On June 12-15 four of the staff members of the Åland Islands Peace Institute (ÅÌPI), Justina Donielaite, Malin Söderberg, Cecilia Brenner and Liselott Lindén took part in the Nordic Forum in Malmö – New Action on Women’s Rights. The overall goal has been to gain new knowledge in the field of strategies and best practices of promoting human rights and equality, particularly focusing on gender mainstreaming in youth activities and prevention of gender based violence.

”Mädchen*treff” is an autonomous youth center for girls between 13-20 in Cologne/Germany. The Peace Institute’s Fair Sex and Open Doors staff had the chance to meet youth worker Johanna Schmitz who presented the center’s causes and activities at the Peace Institute on 31 October 2013.
Mädchen*treff is an independent part of the cultural center “Alte Feuerwache” , which was established with its basis in the second feminist wave in Germany in the 1980s to create a space for girls at a time when youth work in general was dominated to a large extent by boys and men. One of the center’s goals is to empower girls as individual and give them confidence in their personal capacities and skills, to create a space for reflection, dialogue and communication and to foster intercultural dialogue. The center’s work is based on solidarity, participation, a norm- and category-critical approach as well as anti-sexism and anti-racism.
The Åland Islands Peace Institute organizes in collaboration with Folkhälsan on Åland a training for new girl and boy group leaders. The training will be held on 7-8 September between 9 a.m and 16 p.m at Folkhälsans Allaktivitetshus in Mariehamn, Åland. The education is free of charge and the age
An information campaign about gender equality was launched on Åland between 30th of August and 3rd of September 2010. Five ads were subsequently published in one of the Ålandic local papers. Simoultanously the ads were published on the ÅIPI homepage and on facebook, accompanied by questions related to the themes of the pictures in the ads.
”What is gender equality” was one of two campaigns within the project Challenging Gender roles for Prevention of Trafficking, a joint Åland-Latvian project aiming at combating stereotypical gender perceptions at a grass-root level in order to undermine conditions for development of gender related violence, human trafficking and sexual slavery.

For the past three years the Åland Islands Peace Institute has been one of eight institutions in six countries, (Finland, Germany, Estonia, Sweden, Slovenia and Austria) that has contributed to the multidisciplinary research project “European Language Diversity for All” (ELDIA). During these three years a team of experts and researchers in applied linguistics, sociolinguistics, law, social science and statistics has collaborated to gain a better understanding of the political and socio-economic situations of 14 language minorities in eight countries, all of which belong to the Finno-Ugric language family. Among these languages are autochthonous and migrant languages, more vital and threatened languages as well as standardized languages and languages standardized to a limited extent only.
On 27.5.2013 the ÅIPI held a seminar for a group of some 20 participants from regional Organizations in Africa about the Åland Example.
