Territorial Autonomies: Territorial autonomies in the world – an empirical study of the autonomous territories of the world

Territorial autonomies in the world – an empirical study of the autonomous territories of the world.

Maria Ackrén

ISBN 978-952-5265-15-6, 2006.

20,00 euro + postage

“The book describes the territorial autonomies in the world. There are currently 48 autonomies and these are spread across the globe. The author uses the so called Fuzzy-set method for analyzing the autonomies, which is a mix between qualitative and quantitative approaches. This method creates a more creative alternative to the more conventional methods used in political science.

The book is aimed at everyone interested in questions on autonomy and particularly the ones with interest in methodological issues in comparative politics.

All essential definitions concerning autonomy is brought up in the book as well as the authors own definition of autonomy.

Geographical distance and economy are essential aspects in the arrangement of autonomies. Most autonomies are islands or archipelago areas. Another thing that most autonomies have in common is that they usually are placed in the highest income-group according to the World Bank’s classification scheme.

The author, Maira Ackrén is a licensed policies and active researcher at Åbo Akademi university.”
